Proinsulin is the precursor peptide from which insulin is formed. Proinsulinomas are very rare tumours which secrete proinsulin, causing spontaneous hypoglycaemia. Results should be interpreted with a paired glucose and insulin result. Proinsulin will only be measured where there is biochemical evidence of hypoglycaemia at the time of collection.
