Collection Instructions:
2 mL arterial blood in a heparinised syringe. Mix thoroughly, label 'URGENT', pack in crushed ice and take to the laboratory immediately.
Notes:
  • Of value in investigating patients with cyanosis and a normal pO2.
  • Levels may be raised in congenital haemoglobin M disorders and drug toxicity associated with nitrites or other oxidising agents.
Reference Interval:

< 1.5 % of total haemoglobin

(levels may be higher in infants)
