Serum total calcium rises or falls approximately 0.02mmol/L for each g/L change in serum albumin.
Stasis must be avoided when taking blood as prolonged use of a tourniquet gives falsely raised values, as does haemolysis.
Total calcium can be corrected for low albumin levels using the following formula:
