Testing is indicated if patient has exhibited symptoms of suxamethonium apnoea. Testing consists of serum enzyme levels, followed, if necessary, by genetic testing. Please request both, and both samples should be collected simultaneously, and at least three days after anaesthetic. All requests to be checked by the Chemical Pathologist.
Enzyme Testing Sample: Serum or Lithium heparin, 5mL minimum
Genetic testing sample: EDTA whole blood 5mL minimum
Sample must be sent within 3 days.(Collect Mon-Wed only)
Cost of the test: $150 if genetic testing performed. Please ensure form Consent for Non-Rebateable Test(s) is filled and signed.
Enzyme levels reduced in butyrylcholinesterase deficiency, anticholinesterase exposure, protein malnutrition, severe liver disease and protein-losing states (e.g. protein-losing enteropathy, nephrosis). The presence of a mutation in the pseudocholinesterase (butyrylcholinesterase) gene canot necessarily be excluded when a result falls within reference limits. In addition, a number of patients whose result falls below the lower reference limit may have no genetic abnormality.
