Faecal Alpha 1 Antitrypsin

This test is for Protein Losing enteropathy investigation, however is not reliable in the presence of diarrhoea.

Preferred sample type: Random faecal collection. Serum (blood) sample only required is A1AT deficiency is suspected.

A timed specimen collection is no longer available.

Note false elevations occur with diarrhoea, GI blood loss. False reduction occur when pH <3.5 (e.g. from gastric acid hypersecretion).
