For investigation of anaphylaxsis send both acute (e.g. initial ED bloods) and follow up (e.g. after clinical improvement) samples if possible.
Increased levels of Tryptase can be detected up to 3 to 6 hours after the anaphylactic reaction. Levels return to normal within 12 to 24 hours after release. For investigation of anaphylaxis recommends sampling for tryptase at 1 hour, 4 hours and 24 hours post onset of reaction. Baseline serum tryptase is also used for the investigation of mastocytosis and other mast cell discorders. Please note that non-specific Tryptase elevation can also occur in end stage renal failure, severe asthma, cardiac arrest, post-CPR or in the post-mortem period. Clinical correlation recommended.
Increased level of tryptase can normally be detected up to 3 to 6 hours after the anaphylactic reaction. Levels return to normal within 12-14 hours after release.
