PTHrp is rarely required to investigate unexplained hypercalcaemia. It will not be done where calcium is within normal limits, or an alternate explanation for hypercalcaemia exists.
Test must be performed in dedicated, specific tube. Test must be discussed with the Chemical Pathologist at least one week prior to sample collection, to allow for dedicated tube to be ordered.
Test must be requested with iCa and PTH at the same collection.
There ios an out of pocket cost of $120, payable by patient or requesting unit. Financial consent forms are available on the front page of the Handbook.
1 x EDTA containing Leupeptin plus Aprotinin buffer for PTHRP only with a minimum 4mL of blood [Centrifuge specimen, separate plasma into 2 x >0.5mL aliquots. Label aliquots 'EDTA plasma with Leupeptin plus Aprotinin for PTHRP' and freeze ASAP.]
The tubes are available from the Pathology Dept
