Collection Instructions:

2 mL arterial or venous blood in a heparinised syringe. Ensure no air bubble is present, then mix thoroughly, label 'URGENT'. Must be analysed within 15 minutes. Analysed in Blood Gas Analyser.

Notes:

Of value in investigating patients with cyanosis and a normal pO2.

Levels may be raised in congenital haemoglobin M disorders and drug toxicity associated with nitrites or other oxidising agents.

Reference Interval:

< 1.5 % of total haemoglobin

(levels may be higher in infants)
