24 hour collection in a plain bottle

Bottle should be refrigerated during collection and be delivered to the laboratory promptly

Notes:

Used to assess total urea excretion in patients receiving parenteral nutrition

 

 

24 HOUR URINE COLLECTION PROTOCOLS

 

 

The specimen must be collected into a clean, labelled container provided by the laboratory

The patient must be told not to urinate directly in to the bottle if it contains acid, because of the danger of acid burns

If the patient does not urinate directly into the bottle, each micturation must be added to that already collected

Start collection after the patient has emptied the bladder. This time must be recorded on the specimen bottle

The bottle must kept in the refrigerator between collections

All urine passed for the next 24 hours must be collected, including the last of the morning

Complete all details on conatiner label and deliver to the laboratory as soon as possible. If some urine is lost or contaminated during the colelction period, the collection must cease and a new 24 collection commenced
