Enzyme levels reduced in butyrylcholinesterase deficiency, anticholinesterase exposure, protein malnutrition, severe liver disease and protein-losing states (e.g. protein-losing enteropathy, nephrosis). The presence of a mutation in the pseudocholinesterase (butyrylcholinesterase) gene canot necessarily be excluded when a result falls within reference limits. In addition, a number of patients whose result falls below the lower reference limit may have no genetic abnormality.
