Preparation

Wash the area of skin to be scraped with an alcohol swab.

Remove any ointment or residual applications using soap and water.

Disinfect the area with a skin cleansing alcohol wipe and allow it to dry.

Abrade the infested area with a sterile scalpel to the depth of pinpoint bleeding.

Transfer skin scrapings to a sterile yellow top pot for transport to the laboratory. Do NOT include the scalpel – dispose of in sharps bin

Label pot with patient name, UR No and DOB, date of collection, site of collection
